At the end of 2002, Rod takes up (finally) with the world success, with the album"It Had To Be You...The Great American Songbook", which is classified directly N° 4 in States and N° 8 in UK, as well as in first places of the other numerous charts of the planet.

The most black episode of the long career of Rod The Mod is to come: in May 2000, Rod Stewart consults a doctor because of vocal problems, after surgeons removed a cancerous lump from his throat. The growth on his thyroid gland was discovered during a routine scan at a hospital in Los Angeles in April 99'. He had emergency surgery the next day. Stewart, told Britain's Sun newspaper doctors warned him he would be unable to sing for six months but it was actually nine months before his voice came back.

The misfortunes hang... " Run back into your arms " release in the middle of October, while the album which has to follow, "Human" is pushed away until February 14th, 2001, due to the vocal problems of the rock star. The album appears under the logo of Atlantic, the mythical label of Otis Redding or Aretha Franklin. The following single "I Can' t deny it" appears some weeks too much early before the promo campaign and logically gets it all wrong in charts, while for this fast title, American DJ's had promised big success. The second single " Don't come around here " benefits the same missing spirit to be promoted. "Human" is Rod's 28th solo album, it's produced by the cream of the producers of moment. But in spite of prestigious guests as Mark Knopfler de (Dire Straits) and Slash (Gun and Rose) and to spoil nothing, the album is very badly welcomed by the criticism, who blame him for wanting too much to flirt with current sounds R'B . This album is a real commercial fiasco due to a bad promo campaign and a production which does not stick on the character. Atlantic Records transfers without consideration one Rod Stewart who is certainly indeed weakened.

At the end of 2001 a new compilation appears, "The Story So Far" for Europe and "The Voice" for the American market. This compilation puts an end to the period Warner which will have lasted 26 years, let us note that this double album was sold to more than 2 million copies, rather not bad for an artist, who, according to the statements of the managers from Atlantic, did not relate any more enough.

In February 2002, Rod signs a contract at J Records under the leadership of Clive Davis (Santana) and make a lucrative world tour, by visiting States, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany..... Rod has moreover was crowned for the best world tour, by rock - critics Americans.

This year there is also the consecration of the musical industry for Rod, who awards him a star on Hollywood Boulevard, in the middle of the other immortal Stars that are Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Hollyday or more recently Céline Dion.

2006 sounds the knell of the end of the era Jazzy American Songbook, for a return to the Rock, because it's this year that releases the very good album 'Still The Same...Great Rocks Classics Of Our Time' including covers of the 70s and 80s, with the very successful 'Father And Son' written by Cat Steven, 'If Not For You' (Bob Dylan), 'The Best of My Love' (Eagles), the surprising but impeccable 'It's A Heartache' popularized by Bonnie Tyler and finally on the CD edited in UK the enormous 'Lay down Sally' from Eric Clapton. The album is N°1 immediatly after its release in United States, in Canada and in New Zealand, and obtains very good places in the top 10 of the European charts.

Great Rocks Classics Of Our Time' composé de reprises des années 70 et 80, dont les très réussies 'Father And Son' de Cat Stevens, 'If Not For You' de Bob Dylan, 'The Best Of My Love' des Eagles, le surprenant mais impeccable 'It's A Heartache' popularisé par Bonnie Tyler et enfin sur le pressage CD made in UK l'énorme 'Lay Down Sally' d'Eric Clapton.

These Foolish Things", "The Way You Look Tonight" "You Can take that away from me".

The success of the album can explain also by a great promo, with notably, in the dytime of the release of the album in the USA, a concert diffused live on internet but also in many cinemas of the planet. Add to it a lot of broadcasts TVs, and the spotlights TV. Tireless show man, Rod Stewart restarts once again during year 2007, in a tour of Football Stadiums with among others concerts to Hampden Park in Glasgow or Ol ' Traford in Manchester. This tour called "Rock In The Round" be played in Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Spain and many other countries... and France ... whose the single concert scheduled for October will be canceled at the last minute due to ... general transport strike.

Rod still finds time between concerts, July 12 exactly, to go to Buckingham Palace receive from Prince Charles, the medal of Commander of the British Empire (BCE), announced by the Queen Elizabeth II, very officially, in the 2007 New Year's Honours List on 30 decembre 2006.

February 2008, Rod began a long tour that will take him throughout the year to New Zealand in South Africa in December. Meanwhile, he has visited Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Tobago, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Canada and the United States.

If Rod says to the magazine "Rolling Stone" his desire to record a blues album, why not with a group from Ohio "The Black Keys," 2008 saw no new album out. Warner Bros. took the opportunity to release "The Definitive Rod Stewart, yet another compilation containing two CDs and one DVD. We find one unreleased track "Two Shades of Blues" dating from 1998 !

In early 2009, Warner Bros. Released an edition "collector" of the famous "Unplugged and Seated remastered with two bonus tracks ("Gasoline Alley" and "Forever Young" not present on the album released in 1993) but with especially the DVD of the concert broadcast on MTV.

Rumors of  Faces' reunion begin to spread throught the protagonists' conflicting news, and contradicted by Rod, himself busy with his new tour that starts in Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan) before giving some concerts in Europe (Spain, Ireland, England, Germany) and return to USA. During this tour, he introduces into his set-list a new song "Love Train" and announced the upcoming release of a new album "Soulbook", an incredible collection of soul music that he has always wanted to interpret in a tribute his idols Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, The Four Tops...  The album appeared in October starts in the US charts in 4th place, to 3rd in Canada and 10th in England. ITV broadcast a show on December 5 where Rod interprets, between two mini-reportages at home, hits from his new album.

Fin 2003, paraît le second volet "As time goes By...The Great American Songbook vol.2" .

At the end of September,  the superb set "The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998" has been released, an incredible work of research in the archives of Warner Bros. undertaken by the producers Andy Zax and Cheryl Pawelski. With four CDs and a beautifully illustrated booklet, this set delivers a fascinating insight of Rod's work in studio until the final release of his albums, with rough recordings, private audio documents, unreleased versions of some "tubes" and titles completely unknown. We can deeply to regret that some titles have remained "forgotten" for so long.

On y trouve un titre inédit plutôt étrange "Two Shades Of Blues" datant de 1998.

The album includes standards of the 30s to 50s, among which the covers of Cole Porter "Everytime we say goodbye", magnificent "These Foolish Things", "The Way You Look Tonight" " You Can take that away from me". This tremendous case of jazzy jewels is still adorned by Rod's tremendous rocky voice remained finally intact, and which here seems to reach summits. The success was all the more unexpected as no single had been released for this album. A DVD released at the beginning 2002 shows us Rod on top form in New York for a concert in small intimist venue.

At the end of 2003, appears the second volet "As time goes By...The Great American Songbook vol.2". It also composed with famous song of between two wars, several versions are published according to their release in each country and contain a title in duet with a different artist according to the country. The most successful covers are unquestionably " As Time Goes By ", but also "Smile", "Where or When". The album enters directly n°2 charts U.S at the end 2003.

In February 2004, begins the tour " From Maggie May To the Great American Songbook ", where concerts are split into a "rock" part and the second jazzy half. It is during this tour that on August 30th, 2004 on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, Ron Wood and Ian Mc Lagan joins Stewart for a fabulous concert, where our ex-Faces play "Stay With Me", "Losing You", "Rather go Blind" and "Every Picture Tells A Story" among others.

Meanwhile Warner Rhino release in Jun 2004 an impressive box of FACES titled "Five Guys walk Into A Bar" including 4 cds and a notebook commented by Ian Mc Lagan himself. The box includes the essential titles of the short career of the group, but also excellent unpublished works, the titles recorded in studios as "If Loving you Is Wrong" recorded in 1973 and that Rod will record later in his album "Football Loose and Fancy Free" in 77. "Tonight's Number", "Come See Me Baby", "Insurance", "Gettin Hungry" ... and some other pearls, as well as titles recorded live for the BBC including enormous "The Stealer" written by Paul Rogers whom Stewart admired so much.

In front of a success so incredible as unexpected, concerning sales two American SongBooks, releases October 19th 2004, the 3rd of American Songbook, titled "Stardust..The Great American Songbook vol 3" where are present among last covers, a duet with Stevie Wonder on magnificent "What A Wonderful World" immortalized by Louis Armstrong.  This album will allow him to win at late his first Grammy Award !

In 2005, releases the last volet of American Songbooks titled "Thanks for The Memory" with to the program great duets with Diana Ross, Chaka Khan and especially Elton John, long-time accomplice with whom he sings 'Makin ' Woopee'.. The same year Rod is again dad, because Penny Lancaster his new partner gives birth at the end of December to Alastair his sixth child. Tireless, Stewart restarts on tour in Europe, for a series of concert in England, Ireland, Belgium, Germany and Spain.
