What are his major musical influences?

Rod said in 1972 that Sam Cooke was the only artist who has really influenced him. To discover the man who has been more important in his life to point to make of him the greatest white singer of soul music, we did some research on the net and created this page for Rod.

After extensive research and tried to write a short biography of Sam Cooke's life, I discovered on RTL.fr  the marvelous saga of George Lang (a friendly voice for many years on RTL and I suspect him since very long time too to appreciate our monument). It was useless to try to compete with this incredibly detailed document. Worth listening to discover Rod's musical univers. Rod is repeatedly cited in this saga and you can hear his version of "Twistin 'the Night Away".

ROD PARLE DE SAM COOKE/ROD SPEAKS ABOUT SAM COOKE (Rolling Stone Magazine 2010)

To explain what Sam Cooke meant to me, it would take a couple of hours just to scratch the surface. The man basically introduced me to soul music", says Stewart of the Chicago R&B titan. "The first time I heard him, his music hit me like a thunderbolt and just slapped me around the head. I was 15 years old, and he changed my life".

1. Cupid - 1961

This one has an ethereal quality - it's almost heavenly. And no one could sing romance like Sam Cooke.

2. As Change is Gonna Come - 1965

First of all, the introduction is gorgeous and sucks you right in. How sad that Cooke didn't live to see this song released. The tragedy of Sam recording this beautiful song of the civil rights era and then he goes and gets killed - you couldn't make that up.

3 Having A Party - 1962

This is the all-time best going-out-and-getting-drunk song - and that's a long list of songs ! I do this one at my concerts, and I explain that I always seems to sing with my head thrown back, because I saw a picture of Sam Cooke doingt it. I thought, "Maybe that's how he gets his sound!"

4 Twistin' The Night Away - 1962

It's a happy song that leaves you wanting more. You listen to him live at the Harlem Square Club, and he's nice and rough. I play it before I go onstage sometimes and it still inspires me. When you listen to him live at the Copacabana, he's tamed it down, basically, for a white audience.

5. Bring it On Home To Me - 1962

This is a song that just reaches out and grabs you - that's the mark of a great singer. This one's got Lou Rawls on backing vocals.

6. "These Foolish Things" - 1963

A georgous song with amazing phrasing

7 "I love You For Sentimental Reasons - 1957

Sam Cooke could sing almost anything that he wanted to. And he sang the standards beautifully. What gets me with this one particularly is Sam's diction and his beautiful phrasing. You can hear every word perfectly.

8 Wonderful World - 1960

Lately, I have been listening more to the Otis Redding version of "Wonderful World", which is bluesy. Sam's is more bouncy and poppy than Otis'version.

9 That's Where It's At - 1964

"That's Where It's At" is a real latenight song. I would come back home drunk when I was a kid and put this song on, and it just got to me. It still does. Isn't that amazing after all these years?

10. Chain Gang -1960

This is the very first song that I heard of his. I was 15, working my first job as a silk-screener, and I was walking from the railway station to my flat. I heard Sam Cooke singing this on the transistor radio; Up until then, my whole world was Eddie Cochran and Woody Guthrie.

2. As Change is Gonna Come - 1965

3 Having A Party - 1962

4 Twistin 'The Night Away - 1962

5. Bring it On Home To Me - 1962

6. "These Foolish Things" - 1963
Une chanson magnifique avec un phrasé étonnant

7 "I love You For Sentimental Reasons - 1957

8 Wonderful World - 1960

9 That's Where It's At - 1964
"That's Where It's At" est une  vraie chanson de fin de nuit.

SAM COOKE LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB

A son répertoire, il y a beaucoup de titres qu'il a écrits lui-même, comme "Be with me Jesus", "Nearer to thee" et "Touch the hem of his garment".

Profitant du succès de "You send me", l'ancien label de Sam Cooke, Specialty Records, décide de ressortir un titre qu'il avait enregistré l'année précédente : "I'll come running back to you". Le chanteur entame alors une tournée baptisée "The greatest Show of Stars".

"Only sixteen" paraît en juillet 1959.

En avril 1960, Sam Cooke publie "(What a) Wonderful world".

Sam Cooke tourne beaucoup.

AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB".
En ce début d'année 1963, la compilation "THE BEST OF SAM COOKE" se classe N°22 dans les hit-parades américains.

En mai 1963, Sam Cooke publie "Another Saturday night".

Enregistré le 21 décembre 1963, "A change is gonna come" était paru en mars 1964 sur l'ultime album de Sam Cooke, "Ain't that good news".

In 2008, after consulting with artists, journalists and music professionals, the magazine "Rolling Stone" has a ranking of the best singers of all time. In this classification, Sam Cooke, ranked fourth, behind Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Elvis Presley. His most famous title, "A Change Is Gonna Come, " is No. 12 in the ranking of "500 greatest songs of all time, " prepared by the same newspaper.
His exceptional talent, but his tragic fate, made from Sam Cooke a legendary figure.

Sam Cooke was one of the first black artists to get involved in show business by founding a label and a publishing house. He also took an active part in the movement for civil rights.

For his talent, Sam Cooke has influenced many singers of the 60s, not only blacks as Otis Redding, but also whites, including Rod Stewart. Subsequently, he has become a nearly reference universal, quoted by John Lennon, Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and many others.

Sam Cooke moved from gospel to soul music and rhythm and blues, before turning towards music more mainstream. But whatever the song he sang, his voice was always exceptional, unique, pure and moving.

Samuel Cook was born January 22, 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. His name is written yet C.O.O.K. He will add an "e" when it begins in earnest his career as a singer. Sam has a little over two years old when his family moved to Chicago. His father is a Baptist pastor. He has seven brothers and sisters. With his brother Charles and his two sisters Hattie and Mary, he was part of a group who sings gospel and called The Singing Children.

At fifteen, Sam Cooke joined a chorus of teenagers led by RB Robertson: the Highway QCs. Four years later, he became first tenor with a gospel group in vogue, The Soul Stirrers, where he replaced the legendary HR Harris. He imposes upon with a very personal vocal style that completely renews the genre. In 1951, with the Soul Stirrers, Sam Cooke begins recording for the label Specialty Records. In his repertoire, there are many titles he has written himself, like "Be With Me Jesus, " "Nearer to Thee" and "Touch the Hem of His Garment".

Sam Cooke wrote and arranged most of the Soul Stirrers' successes. He became a star of gospel music, an idol and a true sex symbol. But after six years with the group, it will change direction radically.

That's a former gospel singer, JW Alexander, who persuades the director of Speciality Records to let Sam recording a pop song. In 1956, it's Bumps Blackwell, who produces "Lovable, " the adaptation of "Wonderful", a title that Sam Cooke had written for the Soul Stirrers. Not to offend fans of gospel, this title appears under the pseudonym Dale Cook. But the deception was soon discovered and the Soul Stirrers, who do not like the profane prank of their singer, decided to sack him. He will be very soon replaced by Johnnie Taylor.

"Lovable"has not been a smashing success. The producer Bumps Blackwell then bought the contract of Sam Cooke with Specialty Records and both signed with the label Keen, a sub-brand of RCA. The third single from Sam  for Keen Records, "You Send Me " is No. 1 in the rhythm and blues charts on the Billboard in October 1957. He dethroned Jailhouse Rock 's Elvis Presley.

"You Send Me " remains No. 1 for six weeks and sold two and a half million copies. This title which Sam Cooke wrote with his brother Charles, will become an essential classic of the soul music. On 1 December 1957, Sam sing it in his first participation in the famous Ed Sullivan Show.

Building on the success of "You Send Me ", the past label of Sam Cooke, Specialty Records, decided to highlight a title he had registered the previous year: "I'll come running back to you". A first album, titled simply "SAM COOKE", is published in March 1958. The singer then began a tour dubbed "The Greatest Show of Stars". He is headlining, alongside the Everly Brothers and Clyde McPhatter.

During the fall of 1958, Sam Cooke marries Barbara Campbell, who has already given him a daughter, Linda. The couple will have two other children: Tracey, born in 1960, and Vincent, in 1961.

End 1958, when he is on tour in Arkansas with the Pilgrim Travelers, Sam Cooke escaped unharmed from a car accident in which his driver was killed. His friend, Lou Rawls, who is accompanying the group, was seriously injured. He will stay five and a half days in a coma and will need more than a year to recover.

"Only Sixteen"is published in July 1959. It is a title signed Barbara Campbell, but this is not Sam Cooke's wife the author. Her name has been used as a collective pseudonym for Sam and his friends Herb Alpert and Lou Adler. November 59, when his contract with Keen Records is about to expire, he was offered an advance of one hundred thousand dollars to directly sign with RCA. This was done January 22, 1960. Sam Cooke begins working with producers Hugo Peretti  and Luigi Creatore.

In March 1960, Sam Cooke make a tour in the Caribbean. It begins in Jamaica, Montego Bay, and has an extraordinary success. It will be a total of three visits to Jamaica. These three visits are important, because the style of Sam Cooke has a major influence for many artists Jamaican, including Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley.

In April 1960, Sam Cooke published "(What a) Wonderful World". We can find this song in many film soundtracks. Several singers made a cover, including Herman's Hermits, Otis Redding, Richard Marx and Art Garfunkel (with Paul Simon and James Taylor in backing vocals).

In August 2008, a satirical version appeared in an advertisement for the campaign of Barack Obama. The first verse of the song, "Do not Know Much About History" became "Do not Know Much about industry " ("I do not know much thing for the industry ") to put ironically highlight the gaps in economic Republican candidate John McCain.

After "(What a) Wonderful World", Sam Cooke gets another big hit with "Chain Gang" in July 1960. This song, born of a new collaboration with his brother Charles, is No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 9 in England. "Chain Gang" will see many covers, including Otis Redding, The Supremes, King Curtis and also Jackie Wilson  associated with Count Basie.

In January 1961, Sam Cooke is launching his own label, SAR Records, one of the first labels owned by a black artist. He will get his first success in the course of the year with "Soothe Me " of Simms Twins and later with Johnnie Taylor. Sam produces the debut of Billy Preston and he will look after particularly the Valentinos'career, the group that brings together five brothers Womack, Bobby, Harry, Friendly, Cecil and Curtis.

May 61, Sam Cooke published "Cupid". Again, this is a classic, a title that was recently re-recorded by Amy Winehouse on the deluxe edition of her album "Back to Black. " "Cupid" was ranked No. 452 in the list compiled by the magazine "Rolling Stone" of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

In March 1962, Sam Cooke sacrifies to the fashion of the twist, this dance that's all the rage at the time. The single "Twistin 'the Night Away"is a huge success. It sold a million and half copies. "Twistin 'the Night Away" will be recorded by the Marvelettes next year, by Rod Stewart on his first solo album in 1973, and especially in the soundtrack to the cult movie "American College"in 1978.

Sam Cooke tours a lot. He is accompanied by the band Soul Inc.. led by saxophonist King Curtis. More and more often, it departs from traditional circuit to sing in clubs and cabarets upscale, especially in Las Vegas.

On the radio and the Billboard charts, "Twistin 'the Night Away" is replaced by the B-side of the single, that is to say, "Bring it on home to me". It's a ballad style gospel singing  by Sam Cooke with his high school buddy Lou Rawls. In 1970, Lou Rawls re-recorded the song with the title slightly shortened to "Bring it on home". This song is considered one of founders shares of soul music, so that everyone will record it : Otis Reddind in duet with Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett, The Animals, Sonny & Cher, Van Morrison, John Lennon , the Dixie Chicks and more recently, Paul McCartney, George Benson and Al Jarreau.

In November 1962, Sam Cooke makes his one and only UK tour, where he shared the bill with Little Richard. January 63, a concert very late at Harlem Square Club in Miami, Florida, is recorded for a future live album. It released that twenty-two years later, in 1985, titled "ONE NIGHT STAND, SAM COOKE LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB".

At the beginning of the year 1963, the compilation "The Best of Sam Cooke" ranks No. 22 in the American charts.

In May 1963, Sam Cooke published "Another Saturday Night". This title will be taken by Cat Stevens in 1974. This is something that deserves attention because it is one of very few examples where, in his discography, Cat Stevens sings a song he has not written himself.

In July 1963, when his career is all right, Sam Cooke lives a first family drama. He lost his son to eighteen months, Vincent, who drowned in the pool from the family home. This tragic event will affect him very much and will mark his future compositions.

Since the beginning of his career, like most artists soul and rhythm and blues, Sam Cooke recorded mostly singles and that's how he built his career. In August 1963, the album "NIGHT BEAT" is a pearl, an originality in its production. Always accompanied by the band King Curtis, the singer navigates between blues and soul. We find particularly on "Night Beat" a cover of "Little Red Rooster", the Willie Dixon's classic , Ray Johnson on piano and Billy Preston on organ.

In February 1964, Sam Cooke decided to scale back its program of concerts. He reduced his tour of eight to two months in order to take care of business. He now has two labels, Sar and Derby, and a publishing house, Kags Music. In June, he performes for two weeks at the Copacabana in New York. To advertise the event, giant posters were displayed in Times Square.

Recorded live at the Copacabana in New York, the album "SAM COOKE AT THE COPA"is published in November 1964. A few days ago, the singer had attended the premiere of the TV show "Shindig"with the Righteous Brothers and the Everly Brothers.

On December 11, 1964, Sam Cooke was killed in unclear circumstances. He was killed by Bertha Franklin, manager of a motel in Los Angeles where he had arrived earlier in the company of a young woman, Elisa Boyer.

Bertha Franklin affirms that Sam wanted to rape the girl, but she had managed to escape to call the police. The singer would then anger turned against her, suspected of hiding the young woman, and he allegedly assaulted. The manager said that she had shot in self defense.  The coroner will confirm this hypothesis in a quick decision.

We learn very quickly that Elisa Boyer, the young woman who had followed voluntarily Sam Cooke at the motel, was a prostitute and that she would have fled after stealing money from the singer, which would explain the anger of him. Noting several other contentious issues neglected by a summary investigation, some even suggest a conspiracy to eliminate a competitor, because Sam Cooke became a wealthy businessman and powerful.

Sam Cooke dies in full glory, a month before his thirty-fourth birthday. His body is exposed for three days in a glass coffin lid for his fans to see him one last time. The large crowd was soon out of control, the doors of the funeral establishment is broken and the tribute becomes chaotic.

A first funeral service was held December 18, 1964 in Chicago, the adopted hometown of Sam Cooke. The liturgical songs are sung by Lou Rawls and the Staples Singers, while Billy Preston is on organ. Seconds funeral will be held in Los Angeles, with the participation of Ray Charles. Sam Cooke was buried in Glendale, California, Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

The first posthumous Sam Cooke's single  "Shake" released in February 65. It ranks No. 7 in the United States. It would be recorded by Rod Stewart and especially Otis Redding, who regularly dedicate to the memory of Sam Cooke when he will perform on stage. The album of the same title, "SHAKE!", was released the following month.

On B side of "Shake", there is a ballad entitled "A Change Is Gonna Come. " It's a song that Sam Cooke had written after listening to "Blowin 'in the Wind" by Bob Dylan. He was impressed and surprised by this evidence that a White could write so well about racism suffered by Blacks. This song which he wrote a first draft in May 63 after discussions with the protesters, marks an important change of direction for Sam Cooke. So far, he sang mostly love songs, light songs. For the first time he gets serious. Two elements have inspired him: the accidental death of his son, and an arrest by police after trying to get a room in a motel room "reserved for whites" in Shreveport, Louisiana. "A Change Is Gonna Come" will see its success grow from year to year and emerge as the anthem of the civil rights activists.

Recorded on December 21, 1963, "A Change Is Gonna Come" was released in March 1964 on the final album by Sam Cooke, "Ain't That Good News".

November 4, 2008 on the occasion of his election, Barack Obama had paraphrased the words of Sam Cooke by saying: "It's been a long time coming, goal tonight, Change Has Come to America"; "It took time, but tonight, the change has happened in America. "January 18, 2009, Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi have performed a duet "A Change Is Gonna Come"during the inauguration of the new American president at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.

Many artists have taken this title, including the Supremes, Tina Turner, The Fifth Dimension, The Neville Brothers, Aaron Neville solo, George Benson, Terence Trent D'Arby, Patti Labelle, Elvin Bishop, The Band, The Fugees, Seal and Otis Redding, whose version we listen.

In March 1965, three months after the Sam Cooke's death, his widow, Barbara, marries Bobby Womack, the young guitariste and the singer's protege. The family is outraged by this union so fast. Later, Cecil Womack, Bobby's younger brother, wife Linda, daughter of Sam and Barbara. Both will get much succes  under the name Womack & Womack.

On April 12, 1965, four months after the death of Sam Cooke, Motown published a tribute album entitled "We Remember Sam Cooke" recorded by The Supremes. Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Florence Ballard sang eleven of his songs.

Sam Cooke will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, during the first ceremony, along with most pioneers Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles and the Everly Brothers.

Sam Cooke was the greatest American singer of soul music of the 50s and 60s. His nickname "Mister Soul" is far from being usurped. At the time of his death he had sold over twenty million records. Melancholic and elegant, great ballad singer, he was adored by everyone.

Rod Stewart, who is one of his greatest admirers, told the magazine "Rolling Stone" in June 1972: "Sam Cooke is the only one who really influenced me. For a period of two years, I have listen nothing other than his songs".

"A Change Is Gonna Come"is regarded as the greatest composition of Sam Cooke and gives an idea of the direction he could give to his career had he lived longer.

To end this saga, I offer three covers of Sam Cooke's classics "A Change Is Gonna Come" in the version of Seal, Aaron Neville again "You Send Me " and "Wonderful World" performed by Art Garfunkel with Paul Simon and James Taylor.

This album, recorded January 12, 1963 in Miami, published only in 1985, is a testament to the incredible intensity of the stage performance of this singer, very different from the sanitized image that he could give on the videos we can find on the net. By listening the nine titles composing this live, we can understand better the word "rough" used by Rod  in speaking of this album.

A real shock of pleasure to listen ! ...
